Description:
The Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London, was a seminal publication in the field of geology it became the platform for many of the era's most influential British geologists to present their work. Of exceptional historical and scientific significance are the articles by Charles Darwin, which offer insight into his geological research which influenced Darwin’s broader theories on natural selection and evolution. Darwin's contributions include: 'An account of the fine dust which often falls on vessels in the Atlantic Ocean' (Vol.2,1846); 'On the geology of the Falkland Islands' (1846); 'On the transportal of erratic boulders from a lower to a higher level' (Vol.4, 1848); 'On British fossil Lepadidae' (Vol.6, 1850), and 'On the thickness of the Pampean formation, near Buenos Ayres' (Vol. 19, 1863).
A long run of this scarce journal, which reflects the dynamic and evolving nature of geological sciences during a period of intense scientific inquiry and discovery. It also includes contributions by leading geologists of the day such as Henry De la Beche (1796-1855); William Buckland (1784-1856); William Daniel Conybeare (1787-1857); Archibald Geikie (1835-1924): William Hopkins (1793-1866); Thomas Huxley (1825-1895); Charles Lyell (1797-1875); Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) Roderick Murchison (1792-1871); Richard Owen (1804-1892) Joseph Prestwich (1812-1896); Andrew Ramsay (1814-1891) and Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873).
