Until these two expeditions were undertaken the fauna of the Rennell Islands had been little studied. In 1951 the fauna as a whole was made the object of a general study by the Danish Rennell Expedition which was part of the Galathea Deep-Sea Expedition Round the World 1950-52. Two years later the Rennell and Bellona Islands were explored by the British Museum (Natural History) Expedition 1953. It was agreed that the results of the two expeditions should be studies on a cooperative basis and the results published as a joint report.
