Description:
First editions. John Henry Patterson (1867-1947) was a British soldier, hunter, and author. He is best known for his book The Man-Eaters of Tsavo, which details his experiences while overseeing the builiding of the bridge over the river Tsavo as part of the Kenya-Uganda Railway between March and December 1898. It includes the account of two man-eating lions which killed many of his workers, and which he hunted and eventually killed. There are also accounts of hunting many big game species including Kudu, Oryx, Roan, and Rhino. This is one of the most famous of all African hunting titles. Subsequently he was appointed to the post of superintendent of game reserves in the East Africa Protectorate. In his second book, In the Grip of the Nyika, he gives accounts of two safaris undertaken during this time, first revisiting the Tsavo river, before venturing further into the wilds of the Nyika (Swahili for bush or hinterland).
