A biography of the naturalist Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888) by his son, Edmund Gosse.
Freeman & Wertheimer 404, first issue, with original 1890 sheets (including Kegan Paul title page), but with a later Heinemann binding, titled The Naturalist of the Seashore to the spine. Heinemann bought the remaining stock from Kegan Paul in 1895 and reissued the work with title and half-title leaves cancelled and replaced with a section of four leaves. Freeman & Wertheimer (p. 132) also refer to a copy with the original sheets in a Heinemann binding (see also Tucker, D.W. (1955, Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History, III, 223, footnote).
Condition
8vo (230x150mm), orig. maroon cloth, gt; spine slightly faded; endpapers browned. Portrait frontispiece loose and trimmed shorter (207x133mm), possibly from another copy. Good. Signature of C.M. Yonge to endpaper. Charles Maurice Yonge (1899-1986) was a distinguished marine zoologist. He led the Great Barrier Reef Expedition (1928-1929), and was author of many books on marine life and molluscs.
