A collection of narratives and accounts of Portuguese expeditions into central Africa. The main part of the book is Burton's translation, with copious notes, of Lacerda's previously unpublished diary of a journey to Cazembe, a kingdom in modern-day Zambia.

8vo, orig. blue cloth, rubbed, minor wear, corners and fore-edge of front board lightly bumped, gilt title and R.G.S. emblem to spine; orig. brown coated endpapers. Occasional light foxing. Folding map with minor wear/light soiling to top edge; torn across top corner and neatly repaired with Japanese tissue. Good. Bookplate of Hugh Marshall Hole (1865-1941), colonial administrator and pioneer, best known for his work for Cecil Rhodes’ mining companies, and the distribution of 'Marshall Hole currency' during the First Boer War, a currency card scheme designed to alleviate the problems caused by lack of British currency in wartime.
