Description:
The first comprehensive flora for the Vice-county of Renfrewshire, which encompasses modern-day Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and parts of north- and south-west Glasgow. The flora is the culmination of almost 20 years of fieldwork and in-depth research of historical records by the author, and draws on over 50 years of field recording by local botanists. It contains more than 1500 species accounts, which include details of each species' first record, status and distribution within the vice-county. More than 660 maps graphically illustrate distribution patterns for native and frequently encountered alien species. Introductory chapters provide background information about the local geology, soils, climate, landscape and changing environment, and also about the history of botanical recording in the area. Further chapters analyse the distribution of species, patterns of floristic changes and discuss the reasons for such changes. The book concludes by considering conservation issues and what can be done to help preserve plants and habitats. To further inspire the reader's interest, 24 pages of colour photographs show a selection of Renfrewshire landscapes, botanical hotspots and local notable species.
