Description:
The author, Sir Ghillean Prance is former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This book explores the diversity of plants and human cultures of the Amazon rainforest.
It is richly illustrated with over 250 black and white photos taken by Sir Ghillean during the course of his many expeditions to the Amazon region.
The text mainly consists of selected excerpts from the writings of three Victorian naturalists Henry Bates, Richard Spruce and Alfred Russell Wallace, all of whom spent significant time exploring the Amazon region. Many of the subjects that these 19th century explorers describe are illustrated through Sir Ghillean’s photographs.
Some additions on the biology of various interesting plants from the research of the author are also included, including Victoria amazonica, the giant waterlily.
While much of this book concerns the biology of the forest and ethnology of the people of Amazonia, this work also has the goal of demonstrating the current destruction of both the forest and the cultures of native peoples, with the hope that this can be halted quickly.
The Amazon Forest and its People in Black and White ends with selected quotes with pleas for action from some of the most affected indigenous people.
