Description:
The first English-language book on a species with a good claim to being the world’s largest eagle. Written by two Russian scientists who have studied the eagle in the wild for over 10 years and an English scientist who has studied the flight characteristics of the species by placing instruments on captive eagles. Though an academic monograph, the book is written with the general reader in mind. Steller’s Sea eagles are confined to a small breeding area around the shores of the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East. The Sea is a remarkable body of water which, though lying as far south as the Mediterranean regularly freezes in winter. As a result, the eagles migrate south, often congregating on the sea ice close to Hokkaido, Japan’s most northerly island where visitors may see them.
