Voigt (1956/57), Rotatoria - die Rädertiere Mitteleuropas (Rotatoria - the Rotifers of Central Europe”). The author of the revised version was able to concentrate on the most extensive group, the Monogononta with the orders Ploimida and Gnesiotrocha, since an excellent work by P.J. Donner already exists on the Bdelloidea, which contains an excellent treatment of both the terrestrial and aquatic forms of this species. All Monogononta Rotifers found to date in Central Europe have been described by the author in the greatest detail, but a description is also given of all the important cosmo- political species known to the author. As subtropical and tropical forms are also occasionally found outside their natural biotops, in Central Europe, e.g. in heated pools and in waters warmed in summertime, the author has also endeavoured to indicate how these interlopers can be identified. In order to facilitate identification, a numeric code and a dichotomous identification code have been provided, as well as many corresponding drawings which have been collected in the text and also in a comprehensive volume of illustrations. At the end of each genus, lists are given of critical taxonomical data, specific names, which have apparently arisen through the description of conserved artefacts or individual variants. Everyone concerned with the huge group of Rotifers will want to consult the new “KOSTE/VOIGT”. The author has grouped thousands of different illustrations on 234 plates with extreme conscientiousness. Some he drew himself, as he wished to have the various species reproduced as faithfully as possible.

Dieses Bestimmungswerk entstand durch eine völlige Überarbeitung des berühmten Werkes von M. Voigt (1956/57): Rotatoria - Die Rädertiere Mitteleuropas. Der Verfasser der Neubearbeitung konnte sich auf die umfangreichste Gruppe, die Monogononta mit den Ordnungen Ploimida und Gnesiotrocha, konzentrieren, da bereits eine hervorragende Bearbeitung der Bdelloidea von PJ. Donner sowohl die Boden- als auch die aquatischen Formen dieser Gruppe ganz ausgezeichnet behandelt. Mit größter Sorgfalt hat der Verfasser alle monogononten Rotatorien beschrieben, die bisher in Mitteleuropa nachgewiesen wurden, aber darüber hinaus alle wichtigen, ihm bekannten, besonders kosmopolitischen Arten geschildert. Da subtropische und tropische Formen zudem gelegentlich außerhalb ihrer natürlichen Areale in Mitteleuropa angetroffen werden, z.B. in Warmwasserbecken oder in sommerlich warmen Gewässern, hat sich der Verfasser auch um die Bestimmungsmöglichkeit dieser Irrgäste bemüht. Zur Identifizierung der Tiere dienen neben einem Zahlen- und einem dichotomen Bestimmungsschlüssel viele korrespondierende Abbildungen, die z.T. im Text, hauptsächlich aber in einem umfangreichen Tafelband zusammengefaßt werden. Am Ende jeder Gattung finden sich Listen vor allem mit kritischen Taxa, Artnamen, die offensichtlich durch die Beschreibung von Konservierungsartefakten oder individuellen Varianten entstanden sind. Jeder, der sich mit der riesigen Gruppe der Rotarien befaßt, wird zu dem neuen “KOSTE/VOIGT” greifen. Mit ungeheurer Gewissenhaftigkeit hat der Verfasser auf 234 Tafeln tausende von Einzelbildern gruppiert. Ein Teil davon wurde von ihm selbst gezeichnet, um die verschiedensten Arten möglichst objektgetreu darzustellen.
