This is a superb 350 page pocket-sized book adorned with excellent photographs of butterflies in nature and, in my opinion, tremendous value for money. The Foreward describes the location of the Park which is followed by a few pages on the 'Basics of Butterfly Study'. Where appropriate the species photos, arranged in taxonomic order, include identification pointers, always very useful! Taken at random, the page on the Red-base Jezebel, Delias pasithoe, is typical and describes this butterfly as follows: "Subspecies: Chinese Red-base Jezebel, Delias pasithoe pasithoe, Linnaeus, 1767. Bengali name: KuNchkanka. Sub-family: Pierinae. Habit: weak, toggling flight. Prefers to stay in high canopy area. Fond of flowers. Seen in clusters around flowers in the higher canopy. Spotted alone in damp patches on forest road, sipping moisture from the soil. LHP: Dendrophthoe spp. Status in GNP: very common. Similar species: Redbreast Jezebel. WLPA: NM". ('WLPA' is the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, as amended, and 'NM' signifies that this particular species is Not Mentioned in it). The index covers common names, then scientific names, and concludes with host plants, also in the scientific format.
