Description:
Text Dutch. This two-volume set describes all the orchids of the Netherlands, Belgium and the Luxembourg, including all extant and extinct species. They ordered alphabetically with all their characteristics explained in detail. Attention is paid to the most important subspecies and varieties. The taxa are presented using current nomenclature, types, basionyms, identifying characters, particularly those for field identification, flowering times, habitats, and ecology, as well as distribution. The distribution in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg is discussed by country using both historical and current information. The species descriptions are complimented by numerous photographs of plants and their habitats, as well as all known hybrids. Herbarium sheets are illustrated for extinct species by country. 4-km distribution maps are provided for three time periods: 1850-1950, 1951-1999, and 2000-2019.
The introduction describes systematics, biology, ecology, and life cycle or the orchids of the Benelux. Additionally, several chapters deal with topics such as reintroductions, neophytes, conservation and legislation, declines and threats, orchird-rich landscapes and habitats, as well as phytogeographical districts and information on the distribution maps. Finally, matters of taxonomy and nomenclature are treated, briefly discussing the biological species concept.
