Including Spicilegia Gorgonea, by P.B. Webb Esq., and Flora Nigritiana, by Dr. J.D. Hooker, R.N., F.R.S., and George Bentham Esq., with a sketch of the life of Dr. Vogel. First edition. The German scientist, Dr Julius Rudolph Theodor Vogel (1812-1841) accompanied the Niger Expedition of 1841 as Chief Botanist. During the expedition, Vogel formed a sizeable collection of West African plants, the details of which were recorded in the present volume. Vogel fell victim to malaria and died in December 1842 at Fernando Po. Vogel left his extensive collections and notes to W.J. Hooker who undertook the editing, and the book was published eight years later. The specimens were housed at Kew. The first chapter consists of excerpts from Vogel's Niger Journal.
The first monograph on the flora of Nigeria. Plates are numbered 1-50, with 7 being double-page and folding.
