Description:
A set of the New Naturalist 'Golden 14' - All first editions, published in short print runs - the rarest titles in the series.
70: The Natural History of Orkney (1985) by R.J. Berry, and 71: British Warblers (1985) by E. Simms, both the scarce first issues; 72: Heathland (1986) by N. Webb, with "Collins" printed at foot of d/w spine. '… the genuine first edition […] with "Collins" printed to the spine is a rare thing: the print-order was for just one thousand copies, but in the event only 880 copies were delivered, making the first edition of Heathlands the third rarest New Naturalist'; 73: The New Forest (1986) by C.R. Tubbs, ('Collins' to spine, priced £22.50) - only 650 copies printed; 74: Ferns (1988) by C.N. Page; 75: Freshwater Fishes of the British Isles (1992) by P.S. Maitland & R.N. Campbell.; 76: The Hebrides (1990) by J.M. Boyd & I.L. Boyd; 77: The Soil (1992) by B. Davis; N. Walker; D. Ball; A. Fitter; 78: British Larks, Pipits & Wagtails (1992) by E. Simms; 79: Caves and Cave Life (1993) by P. Chapman; 80: Wild and Garden Plants (1993) by M. Walters; 81: Ladybirds (1994) by M.E.N. Majerus; 82: The New Naturalist (1995) by P. Marren, complete with the '50 years' sticker to front panel; 83: The Natural History of Pollination (1996) by M. Proctor, P. Yeo & A. Lack, first issue (with £30 price to d/w flap).
Bernhard & Loe, NN70A-NN83A.
Condition
14 vols, 8vo, orig. publisher's green buckram. Minor spotting to top edges. The final index page of No. 81: Ladybirds, is pasted to the rear endpaper (there is no final blank endpaper), but all text is visible (presumably a production error). Very good set in orig. d/w's (not price-clipped; all spines with some fading).
