The book distinguishes four types of effects: 1) destruction of habitats; 2) disturbance of habitats; 3) barrier effect of roads; 4) injuring and killing animals by traffic. Related measures to reduce these effects are: 1) avoidance; 2) mitigate (soften, moderate); 3) compensate; 4) optimize. Provides an overview of the knowledge and expertise that RWS has acquired in three areas: 1) fragmentation and defragmentation; 2) verges management; 3) compensating for natural values. A number of projects in these areas are described.
