Description:

This volume includes the entire subfamily Ocenebrinae of the Muricidae with 164 extant species across 33 genera. Each species is listed with the author's name(s), the date of description, the synonymy, the distribution, the description and additional comments. The description is occasionally more elaborate if deemed useful or if Houart was the author or one of the authors of the original publication. In that case, the original description is usually included, with additional or less dtails if appropriate. The type locality and the type material are noted only for species named after 1971, referring to Vokes, even if the name is now considered to be invalid. Those species named after 1971 are in bold in the listing which follows each genus. Each species is illustrated in colour with many specimens from the author's collection, unless labelled otherwise. Type material is illustrated for many species. Other back and white illustrations, mostly in the text, also illustrate some type specimens, while SEM photographs are provided for the radula and other details. Photos of the protoconch are provided for many species.

Treated genera: Acanthina, Acanthinucella, Africanella, Austrotrophon, Calcitrapessa, Ceratostoma, Chicocenebra, Chorus, Crassilabrum, Eupleura, Forreria, Genkaimurex, Gracilipurpura, Inermicosta, Jaton, Mexacanthina, Muregina, Nucella, Ocenebra, Ocenotrophon, Ocinebrellus, Ocinebrina, Paciocinebrina, Poropteron, Pteropurpura, Pterorytis, Roperia, Trochia, Urosalpink, Vaughtia, Vokesinotus, Xanthochorus and Zacatrophon
