A prolific engineer, Stevenson is most famous for his lighthouses, including the Bell Rock Lighthouse, and the lighthouses of Cape Wrath and Sumburgh Head. Stevenson also designed and built several bridges, roads, and harbours, and made improvements to lighthouse technology and invented several cranes for building at sea. This book was written by his son, David Stevenson (1815-1886) who also became a lighthouse engineer.
