Letters from Alabama, (U.S.) chiefly relating to Natural History
- Collection : Ken Smith
- Publisher : Morgan and Chase
- Published In : London
- Illustrations : wood engravings to text
Description:
Text engravings, some by Whimper (or Whymper), or by Gosse (initialled P.H.G.). Gosse spent nearly eight months in Alabama, and his account of its natural history (especially entomology) is perhaps the first separate study devoted to that state. Gosse's comments on local customs and habits make this an interesting contribution to the history of the ante-bellum South. [First appeared anonymously in portions in the Home Friend, in 1855, with the title 'Letters from Alabama'. Also appeared under the title Natural History of America, being Letters from Alabama chiefly relating to natural history].
