Condition

12mo, recent qtr calf, leather title piece to spine, marbled boards and edges. Prize bookplate (London University School, second prize in Latin, presented to George Sibley, 1834), laid down to new endpapers. Vg. George Sibley (1824-1891), was a civil engineer. In 1845 he obtained employment as an assistant engineer on the Bristol and Exeter railway under Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In 1851 he received employment as assistant engineer on the East India railway, where his promotion was rapid. He designed and was involved in the construction of several major railway bridges, and by 1868 was appointed chief engineer of the whole line. In 1875 he retired and returned to Caterham, England. In consideration of his services he was made a companion of the order of the Indian Empire. In retirement he devoted himself to literary and scientific pursuits.
