Description:

Editio Nova (second edition) of Schaeffer's Icones Insectorum circa Ratisbonam (1766-1779), with Panzer's added supplementary volume with a detailed analysis of the plates. Text in Latin and German. The finely detailed and delicately coloured plates are by I. St.Loibel (fl.1760s) and illustrate over 2000 insects from the region around Regensburg in southern Germany.

Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790) was a distinguished German naturalist known for his extensive works on the flora and fauna of southern Germany, particularly fungi, insects, and birds. As a professor at Regensburg and a Protestant pastor, Schaeffer balanced his academic and religious duties with a passion for natural history. His network of correspondence included prominent figures like Carl Linnaeus, underscoring his influence and standing in the scientific community.

This edition is notable not only for its comprehensive depiction of local insect fauna but also for Panzer's scholarly contribution. The work is a valuable resource for entomologists and historians of natural science, reflecting the meticulous observation and artistic skill of the period.
