Condition
4to, cont. full calf, triple-ruled gilt border with blind-stamped egg and dart pattern within, scuffed to bottom edge of front board, filt tooling to edges, rubbed in places, rebacked preserving original backstrip, raised bands, gilt rules and tooling to compartments, new leather title piece, marbled endpapers. Occasional light spotting/foxing to text. 27 of the coloured plates have Latin names added in ink to top or bottom margins in a contemporary hand. A handsome copy with fine hand-coloured plates of insects.
Provenance: Bookplate of William Bree (1822-1917), Rector of Allesley. Also with the armorial book plate of Henry Perkins, Springfield, Surrey. Perkins (c.1777-1855) was a noted bibliophile who established a large personal library between 1827 and 1830. He was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1825, and was also a fellow of the Geological Society and Horticultural Society of London.
