Description:
Ralph R. Stewart, a distinguished American botanist and long-serving principal of Gordon College, Rawalpindi, devoted nearly five decades (1912-1959) to meticulously collecting plant specimens from the remote and botanically rich regions of Kashmir and Western Tibet. This scarce monograph, published shortly after his retirement, is recognized as one of his most significant contributions to the field of botany. Stewart’s work reflects his profound dedication to the study of flora in these regions, resulting in the collection of over 50,000 plant specimens.
In 1960, this invaluable collection was entrusted to Professor E. Nasir, who later ensured its preservation by depositing it in the National Herbarium of Pakistan, Islamabad. The Stewart Collection, as it is now known, remains a cornerstone of botanical research in Pakistan.
