Description:
First edition. Charles Cardale Babington (1808 –1895) was a botanist and archaeologist. He studied at St John's College, Cambridge, and while there met Charles Darwin. In 1829 they argued over beetle specimens that a local dealer was selling.
Babington was later appointed chair of botany at the University of Cambridge in 1861. His major publications included: Manual of British Botany (1843),Flora of Cambridgeshire (1860), and The British Rubi(1869).

8vo in 6s, orig. green cloth, blind ornamental border to both boards, minor mark to rear board. Author's obituary, reprinted from 'The Record', August 9, 1895, tipped-in before the Preface. A fine copy. Ownership inscription of E[dward] B[yles] Cowell to endpaper. Cowell (1826-1903) was ..... Pencil annotation to rear endpaper. From the library of Trevor James (1947-2020), Hertfordshire naturalist and coleopterist, with his bookplate.
