First edition. Sarah Windsor Tomlinson (1809-1872), born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, wife of scientist Charles Tomlinson, FRS. She wrote a number of introductory works on scientific and natural history subjects intended for children, including the 'First Steps in General Knowledge' series, of which five volumes were published.
Condition
16mo, orig. brown cloth, faded, blind-stamped decorative border to both boards, gilt title to front board. Front free endpaper adhering to pastedown. Some light marginal soiling. 4cm tear to gutter of leaf A1 and A8 (title page/pp. 15-16). Bookplate of 'Parochial Lending Library, Compton Chamberlayne' to rear endpaper.
