A collection of letters and extracts from journals written by Emin Pasha during his residence in the Egyptian Sudan. Emin Pasha (born Eduard Schnitzer (1840-1892), of German-Jewish origin), was a physician, naturalist and colonial administrator. In 1878 he succeeded General Charles Gordon as Governor of Equatoria, southern Sudan. The Mahdist revolt would cut Equatoria off from the rest of the world from 1883 until 1888 when the relief expedition led by Henry Morton Stanley eventually reconnected with Emin.

Condition

8vo, orig. brown cloth, minor wear to extremities, gilt title to spine and gilt Arabic text to front board; orig. brown coated endpapers, paper split at head and foot of front hinge, but hinge still firm. Some occasional light spotting to text, minor foxing to plates, folding map with 5cm tear to blank inner margin, no damage to printed area of map. Vg. Inscribed to half-title, "Dr Gibson, With the translator's compliments and best thanks, Feb. 22. 1888".
