Description:
First edition. Published in four parts. The completion of the work was prevented by the death of the author. The published section deals with the Limicolae (plovers and sandpipers). The work is renowned for its beautiful chromolithographs (printed by Wilhelm Greve, Berlin), chiefly made from originals designed by the author. The eggs of some American species which occur as visitors to Britain were drawn by J.L. Ridgway; a few plates and figures were executed from drawings by M. Horman-Fisher.

4to, 20th century art. leather. Some occasional foxing to text, limited spotting/blotching to a couple of plates. Previous owner's (J.E. Wightman) book-plate. Good.
