Description:
A comprehensive study of Jamaican butterflies and the need for conservation of those species facing loss of critical habitat. This is the first publication devoted solely to the study of Jamaica's butterflies since Brown and Heinemann's Jamaica and its Butterflies (1972). The book documents the current status of butterflies in Jamaica since the first specimens were collected ca. 1687. A brief outline of taxonomic features is followed by a species list. The habitats in which the butterflies are to be found are discussed in detail, along with migratory behaviour of the 'whites and sulphurs'. On enew genus and a new species are described. Two former subspecies are recognized as full species and fourn new subspecies are documented. The species descriptions include all 136 Jamaican species. External morphology of each species is described along with beautiful colour photographs of the adults and many of their immature stages. Information on adult behaviour is given together with distribution maps. The book combines research and field studies by the authors spanning more than sixty years.
This book will appeal to both academic and amateur readers with an interest in tropical butterflies, not just in Jamaica, but around the Carribean.
