Description:
Text German. The Venus of Willendorf is a complete masterpiece of Paleolithic sculpture. The researchers Josef Szombathy, Josef Bayer and Hugo Obermaier, who found them in Willendorf on August 7, 1908, were immediately aware of the special nature of their discovery. Personal vanities, deep disagreements and legends are inextricably linked to this outstanding find and are still part of the “Venus of Willendorf” mystery today. Who were the people who created works like the Venus of Willendof? How did they live? Today she is for many a ancestor or even goddess and an indication of matriarchy in Paleolithic societies. But what did it mean to the person who carved it out of a piece of limestone? really? Was she an image of strong women or an expression of male desires and ideas? Dealing with the Venus figures is fascinating because in them the thoughts of times long past become tangibly close and we are constantly confronted with the limits of what can be scientifically researched.
