Collection of 14 short papers by and about the plant hunter Frank Kingdon-Ward
- Collection : Ken Smith
Description:
A collection of short papers by the famous plant collector Frank. Kingdon-Ward (1885-1958), who was described in an accompanying obituary ‘as the doyen of plant collectors’. This fascinating collection comprises 12 papers on plant hunting and biogeography (extracted from such journals as, Proceedings of the Linnean Society, Himalayan Journal and Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, c.1930-1955. This includes a work issued in three parts, ‘A Sketch of the Botany and Geography of North Burma’ (Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, Vols 44-45). This work was rather negatively reviewed by B. E. Smythies, in the same Journal, leading to a testy response by Kingdon-Ward (both articles included here).
Also included is a short paper by B.P. Uvarov, describing ‘ Grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Acrididae) collected by Captain F. Kingdon-Ward in Tibet in 1935’, and an anonymous obituary of Kingdon-Ward published 1959 in the Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society, which lists ‘The Plant-collecting Expeditions of F. Kingdon-Ward’.
The collection was compiled by the entomologist and bibliographer Dr Ken Smith and is accompanied by his manuscript list of Kingdon-Ward’s monographs in his posession, noting desiderata and bookseller’s prices.
