Thomas Vernon Wollaston (1822-1878) was a conchologist and entomologist. He published over 40 scientific papers and is best known for his studies of Coleoptera inhabiting the Macaronesian and Atlantic Island archipelagos. He spent a number of winters in Madeira (1847-1848 and 1855) and made several trips to the Canary Islands (1857-1859) to study the natural history, often with Richard Thomas Lowe and John Edward Gray. In 1866 he visited the Cape Verde Islands with Lowe and Gray. Wollaston was a frequent correspondent with the geologist Charles Lyell, and although he could not support Darwin's theory of evolution, due to his religious beliefs, the two men remained friends.
