Description:
1st edition. Rare original edition. title page dated 1900, but this work was not published until April 1901. '...remains the single most important work on Cladocera. Lilljeborg's descriptions of their morphology and his observations on the habits and habitats of the various species are still the standard for comparison. His illustrations are of such high quality that many persons subsequently have copied them rather than attempting their own. Moreover, the treatise is a valuable reference for accurate details on synonymy in addition to those on morphology, ecology and life history.' - David G. Frey (from the Prologue to the 1982 facsimile edition of this work.)
William Lilljeborg (1816-1908) was professor of zoology a tthe University of Upsala, where he also established a zoological museum. His interests embraced the entire animal kingdom. He produced about 75 publications, many as voluminous as this classic work on cladocerans.
Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis. Ser. Tertiae Vol. XIX.
