This book is a photographic record, wasting no time on text. And what photos! - the best i've seen in any butterfly book, not just for their quality but for depicting, where necessary, both surfaces and sexes of each species and subspecies.
It then lists, not only the Brasilian states where each species can be found but all the countries in the Americas where they occur. I cannot vouch for how complete this information might be but considering how few books there are on butterflies of this region, this is a valuable reference book.
One odd quirk is that the indexes (indeces?) are duplicated in various forms but none of them direct the reader to the page where the photo is.
The book is, of necessity, in three volumes, the total weight being FIVE KILOS!, so for the enthusiast journeying to these places, it is not only impractical to use in the field but cumbersome even to include in the luggage!
None of this should detract from the immense achievement in producing this catalogue. Nor should the fact that it only covers 37% of the recorded Amazonian species. It is a collection of all the currently available material. There is more than enough here to keep an enthusiastic lepidopterist happy for years.
