An account of Bertram Thomas' historic expedition across the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert of the Arabian Peninsula. Thomas (1892-1950) was a British diplomat and explorer, who following service in Iraq during the Great War, took several positions in the Near East. He was Assistant British Representative in Transjordan, and later was appointed Finance minister to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman. It was in his capacity as minister that he starting making journeys into the Empty Quarter, and in 1930 would undertake the first crossing of the great desert by a westerner. This work is an account of his journey, with details on the plants, animals, and peoples he encountered on the expedition.
