An Ecological Survey of the Mountain Area of Basutoland
- Collection : Prof Jim Green
- Published In : London
- Illustrations : 10 b/w plates, 2 folding maps
Description:
Very scarce. 'Locally known as the Maluti, the mountain area of the Basutoland comprises some three-quarters of the Territory [Kingdom of Lesotho]. This high-lying massive mountain block of the most rugged topography until as recently as fifty years ago was the home of herds of eland, which were hunted by Bushmen with their poisoned arrows and later by the Basuto with their fast ponies. Since then, however, the eland had disappeared and the numerous native villages are to be seen with their cultivated lands around them in them in most of the valleys, while large flocks of sheep and goats and herds of cattle and horses graze the steep mountain slopes.' (from the Introduction). The survey was conducted by the ecologist R.R. Staples, W.K. Hudson, and F.A. Venter (author ofthe Annexure on Geology), assisted by a staff of six natives.
