Description:
First edition. Rare. Sir George Murray Humphry (1820-1896), British surgeon, who at various time had presidential roles in the Cambridge Medical Society (which he helped to form), the Sanitary Society of Great Britain (1882-1883), the Anatomical Society (1887), and the Pathological Society of London (1891-1893). Humphry was one of the first to attempt to bring human anatomy into line with the science of morphology; he was the first in England to remove successfully a tumour from the male bladder, and one of the first to advocate the advantages of the suprapubic method. From the 1870s he became a major figure in the vivisection debate. Humphry was elected FRS in 1859, after having written the present book. The work was illustrated with lithographic plates by his wife, Mary. (ODNB).
