First edition. The plants drawn from nature by Henderson, and engraved on wood by Thomas Bewick. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) was an English physician and botanical writer who published a number of books including A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus (1797-1807).

8vo, cont. full calf, corners worn, rebacked with orig. worn backstrip laid down, marbled endpapers; small ink stain to fore-edge. Some underlining and annotations in pencil and ink to text. A 4-page printed price list for Butler, McCulloch & Co. (Herbalists, South Row, Covent Garden) tipped in at front, foxed, some annotations.
