Description:

First edition. William Yarrell (1784-1856) was a zoologist, collector, fellow of the Linnean Society of London, original member of the Zoological Society (founded 1826). Yarrell’s books, A History of British Fishes and The History of British Birds were the prototype of a series of books by other writers, mostly dealing with invertebrates, published by Van Voorst.

2 vols, 8vo, cont. full calf, scuffed, some wear; raised bands, gt rules and leather title pieces to spines; marbled endpapers. Recent owner's bookplates (Michael Bryant, Hampshire ornithologist). A good set.
