First edition. This book was the standard butterfly book of the second half of the 19th-centruy and went through many editions; it is now considered a lepidopterological classic. Plates printed by Benjamin Fawcett and coloured by hand. Francis Orpen Morris (1810-1893) was a Church of England clergyman and naturalist.

4to (260x160mm), cont. half-calf, some light wear, marbled boards, rubbed, recently rebacked, leather title piece. Light spotting/foxing to some plates. Publisher's printed advertisement slip for 'No. 1 of The Train A First-Class Magazine' tipped in at rear. A very good copy.
