Description:

A field guide covering all 167 species occurring in Arizona and Sonora including those inhabiting the two neighbouring states. The book is divided into two parts: the damselflies (Zygoptera) and the dragonflies (Anisoptera). Each suborder is divided into families and an entry is provided for each family. Species accounts begin with the common name approved by the Checklist Committee of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas. Species accounts are organized alphabetically by the scientific (Latin) species name which follows the common name.

Each family is divided into genera listed alphabetically. An entry for each genus presents pertinent information concerning important characteristics, distribution, and genera and species numbers. General information includes the habits and habitats of the species, noteworthy or singular behaviors, and selected information of historical or biological import.

Field marks are indicated in bulleted, telegraphic style. For every species, information is presented in a set sequence beginning with the insect’s total body length in millimeters. Next, characteristics are cited for the male, from the front of the insect progressing to the abdomen and appendages. Female characters follow. The most important characteristics are in bold print. Descriptions of species in this book are based on populations found in the region covered by this book. The information may or may not apply in other areas of the species’ range.
