Description:

4th edition, first printing. Introduction by Julian Huxley. This printing suffered from defective colour reproduction (of 7 plates) due to a technical error, and the publisher produced a booklet containing the correctly coloured 7 plates; this booklet with the reprints of the 7 plates is loosely inserted in the present book.

Condition

Fine copy in price-clipped d/w. Presentation inscription, signed, from one of the authors, Guy Mountfort, to half-title, 'For Michael Bryant with the gratitude of the Council and Members of the B.O.S., Guy Mountfort, President'. Also present, two signed, hand-written letters from Guy Mountfort to Michael Bryant (Hampshire ornithologist). In the first (dated 17 Sept 1978), he replies to an invitation to act as the first president of the newly formed Hampshire Ornithological Society, and in the second (dated 1-4-84) he apologises for the error in the production of seven of the plates in this issue, and remarks that 'I obliged Collins to produce the enclosed reprints, which are pretty accurate.' Guy Mountfort (1905-2003), amateur ornithologist and conservationist, was an author of many books including the New Naturalist monograph, 'The Hawfinch'.
