Description:

Large paper copy of the first illustrated edition, of this beloved collection, one of the most celebrated works in children’s literature. Limited to 150 copies in the U.K. [and 100 copies in America]. This delightful collection of poems, a celebration of childhood, written from the point of view of a child, is considered to be one of the most influential children's works of the 19th century. The collection speaks to the themes of exploration, play, and the small joys that define youth. It includes some of Stevenson’s most famous poems, including 'The Land of Counterpane', 'My Shadow' and 'The Lamplighter'. This edition is copiously illustrated by over 100 charming pen and ink drawings by Charles Robinson (1870-1937) marking his debut as an illustrator of children's books. Robinson’s delicate and evocative drawings are a perfect complement to Stevenson’s lyrical verse, which captures the innocence, wonder, and imagination of childhood.

A rare and valuable edition for both Stevenson and Robinson collectors, this work is an outstanding example of Victorian book design.
