First edition. Scarce large paper edition, of which only 50 copies were produced (see p. v). A finely bound set of Upcott's extensive bibliography of English Topography, arranged by county, an important resource for antiquarians, bibliophiles, and historians. William Upcott (1779–1845) was an English librarian and antiquary, for many years he was assistant librarian at the London Institution. Title page engravings of the London Institution and Interior of the Library of the London Institution, by William Brookes.
Condition
3 vols, 4to (275x185mm), finely bound in late 19th century green full morocco by Roger de Coverly, raised bands to spine, elaborate gilt tooling to borders, spine compartments and inner dentelles, titles gilt-lettered direct to compartments 2 and 3, top edges gilt. 10cm tear to gutter of flyleaf of Vol. III. Occasional light foxing/spotting, a little heavier to flyleaves, half-titles, and title pages. Very occasional neat pencil annotations to margins. Withdrawn from an institutional library with neat ink stamps to versos of half-title, title pages, and final pages. Good. With small gilt heraldic roundel of Charles George Milnes Gaskell (1842-1919), British Liberal Party Member of Parliament for Morley (West Riding of Yorkshire) and Lawyer, to endpapers.
