Overwintering behaviour of Diphyus quadripunctorius (Müller) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae, Ichneumoninae) in south-east Scotland
By: KATTY BAIRD & MARK R. SHAW
Page: 217-225
Type: Paper
Synopsis:
Overwintering behaviour of adult females of the ichneumonid Diphyus quadripunctorius
(Müller) in caves and mines in south east Scotland was monitored over two successive winters.
This is a univoltine larva-pupal parasitoid of certain Noctua species, parasitizing their larvae in
spring. The species was found in rather few of the sites investigated, but in one site in particular
it was numerous. There the species was present over the period mid-July until the end of March.
It remained semi-active through the winter in all these subterranean sites, some of which were
prone to flooding. The ambient temperatures were always well above freezing, which probably
allowed the insects to move to safety, although some drowned individuals were found. Wider data
drawn from the National Museums of Scotland collection suggest that, in S. Europe as well as in
Britain, D. quadripunctorius enters the sites in which it will eventually overwinter rather soon
after emergence from its host pupae in early to mid-summer.

Hydroptila lotensis Mosely, 1930, new to Ireland and a second Irish record of Hydroptila vectis Curtis, 1834, (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae)
By: JAMES P. O’CONNOR AND MARY A. O’CONNOR
Page: 229–234
Type: Paper
Synopsis:
The caddisfly Hydroptila lotensis Mosely, 1930, (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae) is added to the
Irish list based on males and females collected on the River Liffey, Co. Kildare, in the east of
Ireland. In addition, males and females of the caddisfly Hydroptila vectis Curtis, 1834, were taken
on the River Dodder in Dublin City. This species was previously only known from Co. Donegal
in north-west Ireland.

Page: 235–238
Type: Paper
Synopsis:
A new species of the genus Sylvicola (Anisopodidae) from New Zealand is named and

Using non-parametric statistical analysis to estimate the numbers of solitary wasp and bee species (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) at study sites
By: MICHAEL E. ARCHER
Page: 263–270
Type: Paper
Synopsis:
The potential total number of solitary aculeate wasp and bee species on 34 research sites was
estimated using non-parametric Chao and Jackknife tests of presence/absence. Successful
estimates of the maximum number of species were achieved for some but not for other sites.
Making further visits to a site or removing ‘tourist’ species data led to further success in
estimating the potential number of species. The optimum number of visits required to successfully
evaluate the aculeate fauna at a site was determined.
A second species of Platypygus Loew (Diptera: Mythicomyiidae) from South Africa
By: NEAL L. EVENHUIS

Synopsis:
A new species, Platypygus emoji (Diptera: Mythicomyiidae) is described and illustrated from
