Syncopacma vinella (Bankes, 1898) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) rediscovered in the British Isles, on the Isle of Wight

By: S. D. BEAVAN & R. J. HECKFORD

Page: 209–214

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Syncopacma vinella (Bankes, 1898) was thought to be extinct in the British Isles until larvae were found on the Isle of Wight in 2013 and moths reared. It was subsequently found at two additional nearby sites in 2014. Prior to this the species had only been known from Sussex in the British Isles, with the last record in 1990.

Agrotera nemoralis (Scopoli, 1763) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) breeding in Cornwall, U.K.

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Agrotera nemoralis (Scopoli, 1763) is recorded from East Cornwall and its status as a breeding species in the area is discussed.

Eclosion mechanics, mating and ovipositing behaviour of Sesia apiformis (Clerck, 1759) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae)

By: D. E. NEWLAND & T. J. SAWYER

Page: 217–230

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
During a ten-day period in 2013, the authors monitored the emergence of Sesia apiformis from a hybrid black poplar tree in Cambridge. Ten moths emerged. Pairings were observed for two females, followed later by egg-laying. The mechanism by which adult moths escaped through the outer bark and their mating and ovipositing strategies were studied.

The importance of proximate nectar and mate location resources for the generalist butterfly Aglais io (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

By: ROGER L. H. DENNIS, MARGARET P. DENNIS & PETER B. HARDY

Page: 233–238

Synopsis:
Observations in four clearings (openings) within conifer forest along a lake bank in Derbyshire, U.K., revealed a concentration of the butterfly Aglais io in one of the clearings where a massed nectar source of sallow catkins coincided with suitable ground conditions for thermoregulation. In this clearing, conspecific interaction, both territorial disputes and attempted mating, occurred over bare substrates and dry vegetation used as perches, and over the sallow; butterflies moved back and forth from catkins to ground perches to heat up. Only single incumbents dominated in the other three clearings, where one of these resources was missing. It was evident that territories are at a premium where associated with a dense nectar source. However, there were indications that the concentration of A. io brought with it increased dangers from insectivorous birds.
