The first European records of the invasive thrips Gynaikothrips uzeli (Zimmerman) and an associated predator Androthrips ramachandrai Karny (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae), in Cyprus

By: DOMINIQUE W COLLINS & DESPINA PHILIPPOU

Page: 1-9

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
The invasive thrips species Gynaikothrips uzeli (Zimmerman) is reported inducing gall formation on the leaves of Ficus benjamina at three locations in Cyprus, which apart from a brief incursion under glass in Germany in 1999 represent the first records of this southeastern Asian species from Europe. A second phlaeothripid species, Andothrips ramachandrai Karny, was also found in leaf galls of two of these locations, as well and a third location in Cyprus associated with galls induced on F. microcarpa by G. ficorum (Marchal). These are also the first records of this species from Europe. Androthrips ramachandrai is a predatory inquiline of gall-forming species such as G. uzeli, and the evidence seems to suggest that the two species have become invasive species together as a result of internal trade in ornamental Ficus benjamina, including their jount introduction to Cyrpus.

The rare bee genus Chiasmognathus Engel in Arabia Felix (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

By: MICHAEL S. ENGEL & JAKUB STRAKA

Page: 13-20

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
A new record of the rare cleptoparasitic bee genus Chiasmognathus Engel (Nomadinae: Ammobatini) is provided, representing only the second documented occurrence for Arabia Felix (Yemen). The new material consists of a single male collected in Sana’a and is similar to Chiasmognathus himyarensis Engel, known from a female collected in the coastal plain not far from Aden. Given differences in integumental sculpturing, pubescence, and their extremely divergent habitats, the male is not considered conspecific with C. himyarensis and is described as C. sabaicus, sp. n.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae, Xyleborini) of New Caledonia, with descriptions of four new species

By: R.A. BEAVER & L.-Y. LIU

Page: 21-32

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Four new species of xyleborine ambrosia beetles are described from the main island of New Caledonia: Diuncus mollis sp. n., Xyleborinus elongatus sp. n., Xyleborus caledoniae sp. n., Xyleborus rusticanus sp. n. Fifteen additional species of Xyleborini are recorded; seven of these are new records for New Caledonia.

Page: 33-36

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Coniceromyia broadheadi sp. n. is described from a male phorid captured by fogging the canopy of an unidentified tree species in humid forest, Panama Canal Zone.

Two new species of Stiliderus Motchulsky; new records of Stiliderus and Stilicoderus Sharp; distribution of the Brendelli group (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Paederinae)

By: GUILLAUME DE ROUGEMONT

Page: 37-42

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Stiliderus thermarus sp. n. and S. mamasaensis sp. n. are described. New records are given for Stilicoderus gondaicus Rougemont and Stiliderus expectatus Rougemont. The distribution of the Brendelli group of Stiliderus species in Sulawesi is mapped.

A study of the male genitalia of the Vespinae (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

By: MICHAEL ARCHER

Page: 43-48

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
An investigation is made of male genitalia in the Vespinae to determine whether male genitalic differences can be used to separate the genera and species groups. Differences are found between the genera and species groups except for some groups within Dolichovespula. A key based on male genitalic characteristics is presented. Analysis of male genitalic structure indicates that Dolichovespula stigma Lee should be transferred from the D. arenaria species group to the D. norwegica species group.

Recent systematic changes in the rove beetle tribe Staphylinini (Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) affecting the British fauna

By: JOSH JENKINS SHAW

Page: 59-63

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Systematic changes in the rove beetle (Staphylinidae) tribe Staphylinini Latreille, 1802, recently published by the broader taxonomic community are screened for novelties that affect the British fauna. Changes affecting the systematic placement and nomenclature of some British species are extracted and summarized here. As a result, four additional rove beetle subtribes are recognized as occurring in Britain because of the new or revised subtribes such as: Erichsoniina Brunke & Solodovnikov, 2015, erected for the genus Erichsonius, hitherto in Philonthina Kirby, 1837; Acylophorina Outerelo & Gamarra, 1985, reestablished for Acylophorus and allied genera; Cyrtoquediina Brunke & Solodovnikov, 2015, erected for Astrapaeus and allied genera; and Amblyopinina Seevers, 1944, reconsidered to comprise many taxa hitherto in Quediina, including the genus Heterothops. Heterothops niger Kraatz, 1868, is removed from the checklist of British valid species due to its synonomy with Heterothops praevius Erichson, 1839. The former genus Velleius Leach, 1819, is treated as a subgenus of Quedius Stephens, 1829.
