The earwig genus Paralabella Steinmann in amber from the Dominican Republic, with remarks on the classification of Burr’s Eocene Dermaptera

By: MICHAEL S. ENGEL

Page: 121-130

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
A fossil labiine earwig, Paralabella primigenia sp. n., is described and figured from a male preserved in Early Miocene (Burdigalian) amber of the Dominican Republic. This fossil represents the first Dominican amber earwig formally described, as well as the first amberpreserved labiine. The species is representative of the living genus Paralabella Steinmann, a group distributed pantropically and today represented across the West Indies solely by Paralabella dorsalis (Burmeister). Paralabella primigenia sp. n. is distinguished from its congeners on the basis of coloration, size, and form of the male apical tergum, pygidium, and cercal forceps. The new species is superficially similar to the extant P. profana Steinmann, otherwise known only from Brazil. Appended are remarks on the identity and classification of the various forms of ‘Forficula’ from Baltic amber, with the following new genera proposed to accommodate these varied taxa: Sthenotropis gen. n., Amblypygia gen. n., and Succiniforcipula gen. n. These taxonomic actions result in the following new combinations: Sthenotropis klebsi (Burr), comb. n.; Amblypygia baltica (Burr), comb. n.; and Succiniforcipula praecursor (Burr), comb. n.
