The first syrphid larvae trapped in amber (Diptera: Syrphidae)

By: G.E. ROTHERAY & W. CRIGHTON

Page: 111–116

Type: Paper

Synopsis:
Two larvae of Syrphidae (Diptera) in Dominican amber were studied. Both inclusions are well preserved with little apparent distortion or alteration of characters. Comparing the specimens with known larval forms within the Syrphidae, they are most similar to the Neotropical genus, Alipumilio Shannon of the Eristalinae and probably represent different species. Species of extant Alipumilio are known to develop in exudations of plant resin. This is congruent with the larvae described here in Dominican amber, whose origin is thought to be resin from an extinct leguminous tree, Hymenaea protera Poinar (Fabaceae). These exudate-dwelling larvae differ from most invertebrate amber inclusions, which are trapped in the resin.
